US President Donald Trump has welcomed British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s proposal for a new deal with Iran instead of the current nuclear deal.
“That’s why he won the election, that’s why he’s going to succeed in Britain,” Trump said in a statement Monday evening during a meeting in New York with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. “Boris is a close friend of mine,” Trump said. “He is very smart. He wants a new deal because the old deal is close.”
The US president said that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran’s nuclear program does not give an opportunity to inspect Iranian activities in this area, saying that it gave the Islamic Republic the possibility to work on the design of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.
Trump said: “I respect Boris very much and I am not surprised that he became a person first talking about this.”
Earlier in the day, the British prime minister said in New York that it was time to conclude a new deal with Iran instead of the 2015 nuclear deal, which is in deep crisis after the United States withdrew on May 8, 2018.
